Golden Globes 2015: The Best of the Red Carpet

It was a safe start to the 2015 awards show season, with white and metallic gowns dominating the red carpet at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday night. Best Actress Nominee Emily Blunt stunned in a custom-made Michael Kors gown, while Julianne Moore, who won the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama award, continued her red carpet sartorial dominance in a feathered, metallic Givenchy couture creation. It-girl Rosamund Pike, too, chose a white dress, hers a cut-out (and polarizing) Vera Wang.

Other notable white and metallic gowns include Reese Witherspoonin Calvin Klein, Kate Hudson in body-hugging Versace, perennially best-dressed Diane Kruger in Emilia Wickstead, Julia Louis-Dreyfus once again in Narciso Rodriguez and new-comer Dakota Johnson in a beautiful Chanel number.

But there was also plenty of color. Viola Davis and Allison Williams rendered the “no red on the red carpet” rule moot in Donna Karan Atelier and Armani Privé, respectively, while Best Actress nominee Felicity Jones continued her red carpet world tour in a demure, teal Dior gown. While Lupita Nyong’o wasn’t nominated this year, she proved her sartorial chops are as strong as ever in a lilac Giambattista Valli gown, with a flowered bustier and sweeping train.

Amy Adams was perfectly put together, if a bit too safe, in a flawlessly draped Versace gown, while Jessica Chastain dazzled in Atelier Versace, complemented with a Piaget timepiece.

Amal Clooney’s red carpet debut did not disappoint, with the human rights lawyer pairing a sleek, black Dior gown with (29.62-carat) Harry Winston diamond drop earrings and white satin gloves she sewed herself (and a “Je Suis Charlie” pin). Also in black, new-comer and winner of the Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy, Gina Rodriguez looked stunning in Badgley Mischka.

Julianna Marguiles paired her Ulyana Sergeenko gown with a statement-making Bulgari necklace (that she helpfully hinted to her husband would make a great gift). For better or worse (my vote is for better), Emma Stone’s Lanvin jumpsuit provided an interesting departure from the parade of couture gowns. Lorde opted for pants as well, sparkling in all-black Narciso Rodriguez.

Christine Baranski wore a deep-red Zac Posen, while Helen Mirren also opted for a red gown.

For the men, Seth Meyers and Matt Bomer rocked navy tuxedos, while Eddie Redmayne stole the show (and the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama) in a perfectly-fitted black Gucci suit paired with a Chopard watch. David Oyelowo chose a sparkled navy tuxedo with equally-glittering black shoes.
